Drills and Drainage

Drill and fill is a process in which 3/4 to 1 inch diameter drill bits on 6 inch centers are drilled into the ground up to 10-12 inches deep. Removing existing soil and replacing it with a straight sand.
This removes unwanted silty or fine sands, and creates channels of clean sand in which water can penetrate and move downward much easier. This will create better drainage, and help with eliminating overly saturated soils which can cause disease and improper soil conditions, leading to unhealthy turf and potentially thin or dead turf. Drill and fill is not needed in all circumstances. But with greens that struggle to drain, it is a huge benefit. These sand channels will remain available for years to come.
