Aerifying doesn’t always mean pulling a core. Today we needle tined our golf greens. Using small needle tines to vent greens on a regular basis is an extremely beneficial practice, with little to no disturbance for golfers. The idea is to creat small air channels down into the root zone of your turf. This practice releases toxic gases such as carbon dioxide, and allows fresh oxygen to reach the roots. It also helps dry the turf and soil in the upper layer to help reduce disease pressure, and promote easier downward water movement.
Rolling the greens after a needle tine will smooth them out and help pinch the holes closed so golfers can enjoy a nice smooth ball roll while putting. We rolled out at 10 3/4 stimp after our needle tine and double roll! (See picture 3 for depth of needle tine).
