We start by lightly vertical mowing all turf surfaces to open up the bermudagrass canopy a few weeks before closure. Once turf canopy is thinned and more open to allow seed to fall down toward the soil, we spray it with a growth suppressant to slow growth. Final mowings on all surfaces are done, then seed is spread evenly throughout the turf at our desired rate. Once seed is applied, then water cycles begin. Light and frequent irrigation is applied to keep the seed on the surface wet.
As germination begins and roots emerge, water is slowly reduced to shorter and heavier intervals to push roots downward. The new ryegrass is then sprayed with a chemical to promote tillering and thickness as soon as it can handle traffic. Once temperatures cool enough that bermudagrass will not outcompete the ryegrass, the course is fertilized to further push ryegrass growth and hardiness. Frequent mowing of all surfaces will promote more tillering and a thicker and tighter playing surface.
