The maintenance practice that is hated by golfers, but loved by superintendents. First it's sour, then sweet! That sour moment when a a golfer has to play on aerified greens is well worth it in the long run. Core aerifying greens has multiple benefits. First we are pulling out the thatch and organic material that make the greens soft and less drought tolerant. This also lets carbon dioxide escape and allows fresh oxygen to reach the rootzone. Along with thatch removal and oxygenation, we are incorporating new sand that will help with downward water movement, and assist with diluting the remaining thatch and organic material. All these practices lead to heathier, smoother, firmer, more draught tolerant putting greens in the long run. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.
