We have got some major clay pockets in our soil here at Conestoga. These clay pockets can be underground anywhere between 3 or 4 inches to 12 inches deep. Water will not penetrate these areas, and the turfgrass struggles as a result.
One of the practices we have implemented to assist with water infiltration in these areas is a deep tine machine. This machine pokes holes in the ground at an aggressive depth of up to 10-12 inches deep. This helps break the clay and hard soils up, and allow these saturated areas to drain at the root zone, and dry at the surface. Continuously working these areas overtime, will improve our conditions and help with water uniformity and playability.
